Not so long ago I was talking with a business man in Korea. Here was I negotiating a multi-million dollar deal but we couldn’t understand each other’s languages. Thank God whenever we spoke to each other, mostly by phone, we had to do so through an interpreter. I learned that it is a good thing to speak slowly and pronounce your words clearly in order for the interpreter to firstly comprehend the message, process it mentally, and then convey in her language to the recipient.
After many months of negotiating, planning, working and getting to know a little more about how he thinks and plans his business, I was asked by the interpreter if I was happy with Mr. Kim. Mr. Kim (his real name) I later found was a common family name in Korea. 21.6% of Korean people bear the family name Kim.
“Are you happy with Mr. Kim?” “Of course I am happy with Mr. Kim. I am very happy with Mr. Kim. I love Mr. Kim”. The Interpreter translated my words to Mr. Kim as I leaned back in my chair waiting for the next question. Everything was unusually silent but I could hear the muffled sound of many voices in the background of what was obviously a call centre, (service centre as they called it in Korea.) “Hello, are you there?” I asked anxiously. “Yes, I’m here, please hold on a bit”, said the operator.
Another extended period of silence continued and I asked if there was a problem. The operator, in her trembling voice told me Mr. Kim was crying and I should stay a little longer. “Is there a problem?” I asked impatiently. I could hear Mr. Kim sobbing in the background when the operator told me Mr. Kim was crying because nobody ever told him they love him, not even his mother. I myself broke down completely. Tears streaming down my face, I became aware that a few people had gathered around my desk on this side of the world looking at me wondering what was going on. Overwhelmed by emotions I could not explain, I told the Operator I would call back later, put down the phone, and while relating this experience to the people around me noticed their eyes too were filling up with tears. One of my team came up and hugged me and said she was sorry for not giving me her attention lately (something I was not even aware of). I told her the Spirit of Love was permeating the atmosphere.
This is what the power of Love meant to Mr Kim, someone I had never met in person at the time. Love is unconditional and makes you feel good on the inside. Don’t you feel like it's your heart telling you it’s good for you?
What would your definition be if I asked you the question, “What is Love? Sometimes the simplest questions can be the most difficult to answer.
If we are created in the image of God, and if God is love, then are we not love personified? I am Love, You are Love, we all are Love, and then Love should be easy, not difficult. Love is not complicated, these words from the greatest book in literature gives such an amazingly profound definition of love. Love is patient and kind. Love does not envy, is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” You can choose to embrace yourself. It is true that when we come to accept and embrace ourselves it will feel natural to extend that love to others. Love is Light! Right now, right where you are, you can choose to move forward into your potential.
Love is the opposite of fear. When you have love in your heart you become fearless. You are confident, you are exuberant. You become unstoppable. That’s what Love can do. You attract those who are lovely because you are lovely. You are happy, you are at peace, and you are content. What more could you ask for?
This is the naked truth of who you truly are.
Love is an aura that you carry with you and that which protects you and that which emanates your power whenever you go. This disposition brings you to a higher plane where you become attractive and success just keeps breeding more success in your life. Love is contagious.
Not long after, I was not surprised when Mr. Kim said he wanted to visit me in South Africa. It was his first time here and since then we have met regularly in the USA, Europe, China and Japan. He has bought millions of dollars of products from me, his connections have become my connections and many of his family are my friends. Love transcends all barriers!
Oh, by the way, he calls me elder brother since that day, the day he knew he was loved. He has now become a frequent visitor to South Africa. Whenever we meet, we first bow to each other and run into each other’s arms hugging wildly.
